Slim Pickings
January 27th, 2008 Posted in UncategorizedThe time still isn’t right for Dave Nonis to make a trade.
In terms of asking prices, we’re all aware that the former Burnaby North Secondary graduate is not willing to trade the farm for a Mats Sundin or Marian Hossa, two players who we know would not be back in Vancouver next September. Get it through your heads, Canuck fans — a playoff rental is no longer the answer. The Canucks need a scoring winger who can actually put points up on the board and at the same time a winger who will not go through the revolving door on the top two lines.
Jan Bulis. Ryan Shannon. Matt Cooke. Mason Raymond. Jason Jaffray. Kris Beech. Brad Isbister. I could go on forever (literally!) about all the wingers the Canuck coaching staff have tried in an attempt to re-ignite Markus Naslund’s feeble game. Has it occurred to anyone that perhaps the reason why Naslund cannot stay consistent is because he doesn’t have consistent linemates?
I’m sick of needing to know who will be paired up with Markus Naslund one night only to discover that there’ll be a completely different look the next.
Which leads me back to Dave Nonis. He knows about this problem, he’s a smart guy. But like I said before, he won’t give up the farm for just anyone. Currently, the asking price is far too high for top-six players. Hearing the asking price of 2 first round draft picks, Raymond and Alex Edler for three months of Mats Sundin just isn’t worth it. Nonis is simply needing to be patient, wait closer to the trade deadline as the bottom feeders deal away their talent for a more inviting asking price.
So in the meantime, we’ve got to get used to the revolving door of players on the top two lines. It’ll be Jason Jaffray on Markus Naslund’s line to start the game but it may be Alex Burrows to end it. And until Dave Nonis can find that perfect trading partner out there, expect nothing less than pluggers to fill that top-six hole on the right wing.

Obviously much isnt going to be changing before the trade deadline. But do u think Dave’s gona be shopping for some top players in the off season? I think the window of opportunity is there while we still have Luongo. Canucks have to show that they want to win and that they have a chance to win(offensively too) if they want to keep Luongo here in Vancouver.

Dave is gonna pull a Brian Burke sign Peter Forsberg to a contract. Then Pavel Bure will reveal that he didnt retire, and was only “thinking about retirement” for a few years and then sign a deal with the Canucks as well. Then he will bring Naslund to a private room and tell him: “Heres the deal, Im gonna trade you to a top dog team for a shit load of draft picks at the trade deadline. Then on July 1, you’re gonna sign with us again. You got it?!” But wait, theres more! Trevor Linden will “think about retiring” 5 months into next season so they will have enough cap space to sign Marian Hossa. Then, when the time is right, Linden will sign a 1 year deal to loop hole the idea of a salary cap.. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
