Tanguay On His Way Out
January 19th, 2008 Posted in UncategorizedAs reported first by TSN’s Pierre McGuire, during last night’s game between the Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings, McGuire reported that Calgary left winger Alex Tanguay has agreed to waive his no-trade clause and could soon be on his way out. Tanguay currently makes $5.25M and is signed on through the 2008/09 season.![]()
And while Tanguay is a legitimate, high-scoring winger, something tells me that Calgary GM Darryl Sutter has something big in the works. I’ve been told that Sutter has been scouting several Eastern Conference teams, namely Toronto, Florida, Boston and Montreal. Could something centred around Mats Sundin be in the works?
To be quite honest, if Calgary were to move some salary, Tanguay would be the best candidate. He oozes talent, but Kristian Huselius and Daymond Langkow are players the Flames should be looking at locking up on a long-term basis. Both make a paltry 1.4M and 2.4M respectively, which is less than half they could command on the open market. Langkow is signed through next season but Huselius is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year. Sutter would be insane not to sign Kristian Huselius.
Trading Tanguay could garner a lot of great prospects/picks which could in turn be traded for a scoring centre in Mats Sundin. Something is cooking.

Actually, Langkow is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year.

You’re right, my mistake. All the more reason to believe Sutter could be unloading Tanguay, to make cap space for Huselius and Langkow!
