About Matt
What can I say? A large part of my life has, and probably always will be, about sports. I can now say with some finality that I’ve played in almost any sport possible. Street hockey took up a lot of my childhood life as I made different forays into baseball and soccer. As I began high school and university I began experimenting with football and rugby before finding my ultimate passion in both ice and roller hockey. I’m your typical sports nut.
When I was a kid, writing and sports seemed to be two of my most loved passions. I guess it only seemed like fate when I decided that sports journalism was the thing for me. Growing up, like any sports fanatic would, I embraced the likes of Rogers Sportsnet, TSN, ESPN, UTV, CTV and The Score. More recently I’ve become addicted to sports radio and the local sports station the TEAM 1040 while making an impact in the sports section of the Simon Fraser University student newspaper The Peak.
As I get a little older and a little wiser, I think it’s time that I really start becoming aggressive in finding journalism and sporting opportunities. I value that kind of experience in a high regard, as there is no better substitute to get your feet wet in this industry. Upon graduation from SFU I’m hoping to enroll into the BCIT Broadcasting program and get real serious about my career.
A little more about Matt …
Born and Raised: Burnaby, British Columbia
Favourite Food: California roll and teriyaki chicken
Favourite Place to Visit: A good trip to Hawaii is good for anyone.
Favourite Movie: “Miracle” is definitely up there, but I love the football movies “Remember the Titans” and “Friday Night Lights”
Favourite NHL Player: Oh boy, this could go on a while. When I was a kid, like all Canuck fans, I loved seeing Pavel Bure go end to end, that couldn’t be beat. After he was traded I started expanding my favourite players to across the NHL: Paul Kariya, Joe Sakic, Nick Lidstrom and Mattias Ohlund are a few. And I can’t forget Alex Ovechkin.
First Canuck I Met: When I was a kid I met Mattias Ohlund at one of the Canuck For Kids Carnivals (Unfortunately, they don’t hold these anymore). This was the fall after he had eye surgery from being hit in the eye with the puck and I remember, being no more than eight years old, asking him “Did the shot hurt?” … And Ohlund laughed and said “It wasn’t too bad.”
If I Wasn’t a Journalist: I’d probably be in business. The life of an NHL agent has always intrigued me.
